A Statement from Moody Bible Institute President

19 October, 2020

Dear Moody Family,

Many of you have heard or read about the allegations made over the weekend on social media regarding mishandling of cases and the lack of student care within our Title IX and Student Life offices.

As the father of a daughter that graduated from a Christian college, a son that graduated from Moody Bible Institute, and another son who is currently in college, these allegations deeply trouble me. As I’ve listened to the stories of our students, my heart aches for their pain.

I have served as an urban pastor for many years, and during that time walked alongside and ministered to victims of sexual abuse and violence. My wife, Dee, and I have also spent countless hours helping victims escape abusers and ensuring protection for the wounded and their families. I am deeply saddened to hear of victims on our campus who feel like their voices were not heard, or that proper safety measures were not taken.

As President of Moody Bible Institute, and an alum, I am committed to ensuring that all of our campuses are not only safe for all students, but also a place that takes seriously the voice of victims and follows through on dealing with abuse of any kind. If our community has failed to uphold that commitment in the past, I am profoundly sorry for the pain and wounds this may have caused students and their loved ones.

Our Provost, Dr. Dwight Perry, and his leadership team spent this past weekend finalizing a clear plan of action to address these serious concerns. I have met with them and approved their recommendations on the path forward. Dr. Perry and I will share the plan with staff and students during President’s Chapel tomorrow (Tuesday, October 20), and release it to the rest of the Moody family immediately afterward.

I ask that you be in prayer as these allegations are investigated. As followers of Jesus Christ, we desire the truth to be known, that those who have suffered are comforted and cared for, and that the Lord gives us wisdom as to the proper steps we need to take to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both current and future students.

Humbly,

Mark
