Dr. John Clark Named Chair of Newly Formed Theology Field
Professor of Theology at Moody Bible Institute, Dr. John Clark, has been named Chair of the newly formed Theology field.
“Dr. Clark is not only an accomplished theologian and profound professor to his students, but his fellow professors will now be strengthened and encouraged further in their already effective work through his mentoring and leadership,” said Dr. Michael Rydelnik, vice president and dean of Moody’s undergraduate school.
“We are all grateful that he accepted this position and are praying for his leadership of this important field which seeks to help students think theologically, ground them in a biblical worldview and prepare them for the calling God has on their life.”
For the last several years, Bible and Theology have been combined under one Field Chair. It represents the largest portion of Moody’s faculty as well as the undergraduate student body. By strategically making them separate fields with a Chair for each, it will significantly increase Moody’s effectiveness in serving faculty and teaching students in the classroom. While there will be a Bible field and a Theology field, they will function as a unified group.
“Bible and Theology have in fact been separate fields for most of Moody’s history, but they have always maintained a unified relationship in academic program planning and faculty collaboration for example because of their shared subject matter and objectives,” added Dr. Rydelnik. “We deeply value that spirit and will continue a unified relationship moving forward.”
Dr. Gerald Peterman will continue in his role as Chair of the Bible field, while Dr. Clark will step into his new role as Chair of the Theology field on January 1, 2024.
“I am humbled and deeply honored to step into this role,” said Dr. Clark, now in his fourteenth year on faculty at Moody. “I love my colleagues and students, and count this ministry among the sweetest and choicest blessings of my life.”
Drs. Peterman and Clark will hold Bible and Theology faculty meetings together and seek to serve students in the most effective and meaningful manner to ensure consistency related to curriculum and academic programs. As chair of Theology, Dr. Clark will manage course scheduling for all Theology classes, as well as faculty evaluations and other administrative duties. He will continue to teach classes such as Systematic Theology and Apologetics, along with several others.
He earned a bachelor of arts from Spring Arbor University, along with a ThM from Dallas Theological Seminary and a PhD from the University of Toronto. He regularly publishes theological articles, and most recently published with fellow faculty member, Dr. Marcus Johnson, A Call to Christian Formation: How Theology Makes Sense of Our World as well as The Incarnation of God: The Mystery of the Gospel as the Foundation of Evangelical Theology. He and his wife Kate have been married for 26 years and have a son and daughter in college. Dr. Clark is also an ordained minister in his local church.
