Moody Alumni Association recognizes Dr. Gerald Peterman at Founder’s Week 2023
This year’s Faculty Citation Award was given to Dr. Gerald Peterman, professor of Bible and field chair of Moody’s Bible and Theology department. Jeff Bope ’11, executive director of the Alumni Association, presented the award to Peterman on October 20, 2023.
“He’s an excellent Bible scholar, a caring professor, and a wise counselor,” Bope shared from one of Peterman’s colleagues on faculty. His colleague added, “His gentleness and steadfast character is a balm to all those who spend time in his presence.”
Each year the Alumni Association chooses one nominated faculty member to honor for his or her distinguished service.
Known for his breadth of knowledge and expertise on topics that span New Testament, Pauline Theology, and Biblical Theology, Peterman is a sought-after professor with 20+ years of theological study and practical ministry experience. He also serves as the director of the Masters of Arts in Biblical Theological Studies at Moody Bible Institute.
His depth of study on the theology of suffering has made him not only an esteemed academic, but also a trusted voice on the theologically informed study of spiritual and emotional health—understanding the role that emotions play in living out the Christian life.
Peterman came to Moody in 2002, from teaching at Palm Beach Atlantic College in West Palm Beach, Florida. Prior to that, he spent four-and-a-half years planting churches for the Evangelical Free Church in central Florida and in south central Iowa. Earlier in life, Peterman also served nine years in the Air National Guard as a chaplain, ministering to the emotional and spiritual needs and challenges of active duty officers.
In addition to teaching, Peterman is also a prolific writer and has contributed to The Moody Handbook of Preaching, Proclaiming Jesus, and The Moody Bible Commentary. Dozens of his theological and scholarly written pieces have appeared in various published journals and bulletins. He has also written two books with Moody Publishers which are Joy and Tears: The Emotional Life of the Christian (2013), and Between Pain and Grace: A Biblical Theology of Suffering coauthored with colleague and fellow Moody professor, Dr. Andrew Schmutzer (2016).
Peterman has helped his students and readers dive deep into God’s Word and discover life-giving truths to inform the mind and heal the heart and soul. For more than 20 years, he has faithfully served in Moody’s Theology department and provided edifying guidance on topics of research and interests, including: New Testament Greek Language and Exegesis, Greek and Roman Backgrounds to the New Testament, Pauline Theology, and Biblical Theology.
He has been married to his wife, Marjory, since January 1984, and together they have two adult daughters, Bethany and Grace.
